Puffing Billy

Puffing Billy is a heritage railway that winds through the scenic southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges only 40kms East of Melbourne. It is an icon of the area and has been providing Melbourne families with fun filled day trips for decades.

The Puffing Billy railway, which is known as a narrow gauge railway, opened in the early 1900's and after years of restoration work is now one of the world's most popular steam heritage railways.

The Great Train Race

This popular Puffing Billy race is an annual event that gives seasoned and casual runners the opportunity to take on Puffing Billy's big G42 steam train in a 13.2km race from Belgrave to Emerald Lake.

First Class Travel and Dining

Puffing Billy offers luncheons and dining experiences aboard century old first class carriages. The "Luncheon Special" departs daily at 12:20 from Belgrave. There are 4 delicious dining options to choose from. While Puffing Billy's "Dining Special" offers a unique dining experience; sit down to a 3 course country-style meal and enjoy a drink from a great selection of local and imported wines and beer. The service is available on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Family Fun

Make the most of your train journey and stop off at Menzies Creek station to visit the Steam Museum where a unique collection of locomotives from Australia and around the world are on display. Or plan your day around the "Thomas the Tank Engine Show" where kids can ride on a train pulled by Thomas, take photos and enjoy other fun activities.
